Park Rest Journal — October 2026 · Places
October is the last month when North Cyprus's state museums keep their summer hours, open until 6 or 7pm rather than cut back for winter. Daytime temperatures sit around 25–28°C — ideal for taking in the castles and archaeological parks without rushing or crowds.
Getting there
The island's museums cluster around three spots: Kyrenia (Girne) — the castle and Shipwreck Museum in the old harbour; Nicosia (Lefkoşa) — the Arabahmet quarter and Kyrenia Gate; and Famagusta (Gazimağusa) and its surroundings, including Salamis and St Barnabas Monastery, 8.6 km outside town. From Nicosia, Kyrenia Castle is about 30 minutes along the Lefkoşa-Girne highway, with paid municipal parking at the harbour entrance. Salamis and St Barnabas are 10–15 minutes by car from Famagusta.
What to see
At Kyrenia Castle, make time for the Shipwreck Museum: a 4th-century BC Greek merchant vessel, a rare find even on an island with this much history. Tickets cost 150 TL; the till closes at 18:00. In Nicosia you can cover three sights in one trip: the Derviş Paşa Mansion in Arabahmet (100 TL, but only open Saturday and Sunday), the Whirling Dervishes' lodge by Kyrenia Gate (100 TL, weekdays until 15:30), and the free Museum of Barbarism on Derboyu, also weekdays only. Bellapais Abbey, 10 minutes from Kyrenia, stays open until 19:00 (150 TL), with free parking nearby and the terrace of the Kybele restaurant next door.
Closed for restoration this season are Othello's Tower and the Canbulat Museum in Famagusta, the Icon Museum of Archangel Michael in Kyrenia, and Saçaklı Ev and the Bedesten in Nicosia — cross these off your list before you set out. The Iskele Archaeological Museum, housed in the old Bandabuliya market building, is open weekdays until 15:30, tickets 100 TL.
Museum opening hours change after 31 October — check before you travel.
- Time your Nicosia museum visits for weekdays: the Derviş Paşa Mansion is shut at weekends, and the Museum of Barbarism opens Monday to Friday only.
- Wear closed, non-slip shoes: the steps at Kyrenia Castle are worn smooth by centuries of use and slippery even in dry weather.
- Carry both cash and card: the Department of Antiquities' ticket offices take TL and card, but not every site has a working terminal.
- Avoid Sundays if you want a museum to yourself: entry is free for TRNC citizens that day, and local visitor numbers rise sharply.
- Allow half a day for Salamis and St Barnabas Monastery near Famagusta: the drive between them is only 10–15 minutes, but each site needs at least an hour.
