Park Rest Journal — October 2026 · Food
October is market month, not supermarket month: the new olive harvest is in, pomegranates and persimmons have ripened, and crates of green mango and the season's first mandarins sit at the stalls. Every major town in North Cyprus has its own market day, and with a bit of planning you can cover three markets in a week and see what the island's eating this season.
Getting There
Kyrenia (Girne)'s market — Girne Açık Pazar Yeri — runs on Wednesdays from 08:00 to 16:00–18:00, by the Police Headquarters and Barış Park. It's 1.5 km from the Old Harbour, a 15–20 minute walk, or a dolmuş (shared minibus) from the bus station takes 5–7 minutes; free parking nearby. Famagusta (Gazimağusa)'s market — Perşembe Pazarı — is on Thursdays, 08:00–17:00, in the Baykal district by the old bus station and the Zafer Anıtı monument; it's 10–15 minutes on foot from the Old Town, or a short dolmuş ride, with parking on the surrounding streets. In Nicosia (Lefkoşa), the covered Bandabulya on Arasta Street is open Monday to Saturday, 08:00–17:00, closed Sundays; it's a 5-minute walk from the Ledra Street crossing. The outdoor market at the Merkez Lefkoşa complex adds Thursday and weekend trading, but you can't drive into the Old Town — park by the Kyrenia Gate and walk the last 10 minutes.
What to Buy
At the dairy stalls in October, look for fresh and dried hellim (halloumi-style cheese), nor cheese and curd — it's best to arrive at opening, 08:00–10:00, when the best fish also goes fastest. Among the local specialities on the tables: çakıstes, crushed green olives with coriander; harnup pekmezi, carob syrup; and ceviz macunu, a preserve made from young green walnuts. Pomegranate season is at its peak now, alongside persimmons and the new olive harvest, and the first citrus — lemons and mandarins — is already appearing, though the main harvest is still to come.
From February 2026, Iskele has its own Kapalı Pazar Yeri — the island's largest covered market, at 4,000 sq m, with parking for 300 cars and a free shuttle bus; for anyone based on the east coast, it beats the long drive to Famagusta.
Plan around the day you need: the Kyrenia, Famagusta and Nicosia markets don't overlap.
- Arrive at 08:00–10:00 if you want the best fish and village cheeses — they go quickly.
- Bring cash in Turkish lira (TL): card payments are rarely accepted at outdoor stalls.
- Ask for a discount on fruit and vegetables bought by the crate, especially after 15:00 as stalls wind down.
- Don't drive into Nicosia's Old Town: park by the Kyrenia Gate and walk in.
- Coming from the east coast, check the new Iskele market's hours first — it's closer and bigger.
