Park Rest Journal — October 2026 · Sea

Every day along the north coast of North Cyprus (TRNC) the same sea breeze builds — it swings in off the warming land and, by midday, turns into a proper chop. In October it's milder than at the height of summer, but it still decides whether you get a calm swim or need to catch your moment before noon. The gap between an exposed beach and a sheltered bay is especially noticeable this month.

When to go

The breeze usually swings round to the north-west by 11:00–12:00 and builds through the afternoon, reaching 15–20 knots by 14:00–16:00. That means the morning window, 08:00 to 11:00, gives flat, calm water on almost any beach, exposed ones included. After midday, head for bays sheltered by the lie of the land: the Kyrenia (Beşparmak) mountains, rising to 1024m, shield the lowlands to the south, while some bays are protected by small islets or breakwaters regardless of the mountains.

Getting there

Escape Beach in Alsancak, 9km west of Kyrenia (Girne), is sheltered from the swell by a rocky islet at the mouth of the bay — the water there stays calm even when the breeze picks up. Kervansaray Halk Plajı in Karaoğlanoğlu, 7km from Kyrenia, sits in a horseshoe bay behind a concrete breakwater; the drive along Karaoğlanoğlu Caddesi takes 10–15 minutes by car or dolmuş (shared minibus), with free parking nearby. East of Kyrenia, in Çatalköy, Shayna Beach Club is sheltered by a stone breakwater. Famagusta (Gazimağusa) has a similar setup at Glapsides: the bay on the east side of the island is sheltered from the prevailing north-westerlies, and it's a 10-minute drive from the town centre via the Burhan Nalbantoğlu junction, with free parking.

What to budget

Entry at Kervansaray and Glapsides is free; a sunlounger-and-umbrella set runs 70–100 TL (as of July 2026 — check before you go). For something further afield, there's Kaplıca at the foot of Kantara Castle, tucked into a bay sheltered from the north wind by the hills of the Karpaz peninsula: it's about an hour's drive from Kyrenia or Famagusta, 65km, but there's parking right there and a fish restaurant at the Kaplıca Hotel — easy to combine with a walk up to the castle.

Before midday the sea is calm almost everywhere; after that, look for a sheltered bay.
  • Plan a beach day before midday if you're heading to an exposed beach without a bay — after 12:00 the water starts to chop up.
  • Lifeguards on municipal beaches in October are only on duty until 17:00–18:00; swim later at your own risk.
  • Bring small-denomination TL cash for Kervansaray and Glapsides — sunlounger hire is paid on the spot.
  • Allow an hour's drive each way to Kaplıca, plus lunch at the fish restaurant, and combine it with a visit to Kantara Castle.
  • Check Shayna Beach Club's opening hours in advance: evening programmes wind down earlier than the summer schedule in October.
