The western edge of Northern Cyprus around Güzelyurt and Lefke is the quietest part of the island for anyone who wants antiquity without crowds. There are two sites: the Roman town of Soli with its basilica mosaics, and the palace of Vouni on a crag above Morphou Bay. In August you go in the morning: both open at 08:00, and by midday the only shade on the Vouni hill is the one under your own hat.
Getting there
Soli lies about 2 km west of Lefke by the village of Gemikonağı, off the main Güzelyurt–Lefke road. Vouni is another 9 km or so further towards Yeşilırmak; a narrow, steep road leads up to the palace, with a small car park at the top and the ticket office up there too, not at the barrier. From Famagusta (Gazimağusa) to Güzelyurt is 96.4 km and about an hour and a half; from Kyrenia (Girne) it is easier to go via Nicosia (Lefkoşa).
What to see
At Soli the highlight is the 4th–5th-century basilica, where the mosaic floor survives under a canopy; the best known shows a swan. Higher up the slope is the restored Roman theatre facing the sea and the remains of the agora. Vouni is a palace complex of the 5th–4th centuries BC: terraces, courtyards, a cistern and the water system, with the remains of a temple at the top and a view over the coast and Soli. Allow 1–1.5 hours for Vouni and about an hour for Soli.
Soli by eight in the morning, then Vouni, and into the shade by midday.
Hours and tickets
In summer Soli is open 08:00–18:00; the ticket cost 50 TL (as of summer 2024; check the current price with the club concierge). Vouni is open 08:00–18:00, last entry 17:00, tickets 150 TL, students 50 TL (as of May 2026). In Güzelyurt itself the archaeology museum and the church of St Mamas with its 16th-century icons are open about 9:00–17:00; the church is kept locked, so you buy the ticket at the museum and a member of staff opens the door.
- Start with Soli at opening, 8:00, and be up at Vouni before 10am.
- Wear closed shoes: the stones at Vouni and in the Soli theatre are uneven.
- Bring cash in lira: the ticket offices are small and do not always take cards.
- In Güzelyurt go to the museum and ask for the church of St Mamas to be opened.
- On the narrow road up to Vouni, let oncoming cars pass at the wider spots, not on the bends.
