Can you go to Northern Cyprus in August with children? Yes, if you accept the rules of the hottest month. Climate records give around 35°C by day near Kyrenia (Girne), 21°C at night, a sea at 28°C, two rainy days a month on average and a UV index of 10 out of 11. The swimming is the best of the year, but the day splits into morning and evening.
Shaping the day
Doctors and locals agree: avoid direct sun between 11:00 and 17:00 and keep children in the shade. Beach from seven to nine in the morning and after 18:00, when the water is still warm but the sun is low; the middle of the day is for lunch, a nap, a pool under an awning or the air conditioning. The water parks are built around this: Acapulco in Kyrenia runs sessions 10:00–12:00 and 14:00–17:00, adults 1,000 TL, children aged 4–11 400 TL (as of June 2026). The funfair at Long Beach in Iskele opens only in the evening, roughly 18:00–22:00.
Where to escape the sun
Kyrenia Castle with its shipwreck museum is open in summer 08:00–19:00, last entry 18:00, tickets 150 TL, students 50 TL (as of August 2026). Go at opening: by ten the walls are already hot. The mosaics of the basilica at Soli are under a canopy, the Güzelyurt museum and the church of St Mamas give you an hour of cool, and in Nicosia (Lefkoşa) midday with a pushchair is easier in the museums of the old town.

What's closed and what's packed
Little is closed in August: beaches, museums, restaurants and water parks all run. But 1, 25 and 30 August are public holidays (25 August provisionally): banks and government offices shut, and the beaches and waterside restaurants are especially crowded. Alagadi beach is open by day from 8:00 to 20:00 and closed at night to everyone but the volunteers: hatchlings are emerging there until the end of September. Book a table on the Kyrenia seafront ahead on those days.
- Be on the beach by 8am and leave by 10:30; the second session is after 18:00.
- Take high-factor sunscreen, caps and swim T-shirts: a child's skin burns in 10 minutes.
- Arrive at Kyrenia Castle at 8:00 when the ticket office opens, not after lunch.
- Never leave children in a parked car, even for five minutes: the cabin heats up in no time.
- For 1, 25 and 30 August, book waterside tables and sunbeds in advance: they are public holidays.
