Park Rest Journal — August 2026 · Getting there
Northern Cyprus is small, but in August a drive between towns takes longer than the map promises: heat, packed cars around the beaches and the narrow road beyond Bafra. Here are real journey times between Kyrenia (Girne), Famagusta (Gazimağusa), Iskele and the Karpaz, plus where to fill up and park, so you can plan a transfer or a day out.
How long to allow
From Famagusta to the centre of Iskele is 21.7 km and 25–30 minutes, to Long Beach 23.1 km and about half an hour, to Kyrenia 80.6 km and 75–90 minutes on the dual carriageway. To Dipkarpaz it is 84.3 km and 90–105 minutes, to Golden Beach on the Karpaz 100.9 km and 2–2.5 hours (as of June 2026). Kyrenia to Nicosia (Lefkoşa) is 24 km over the pass, about 30 minutes; Ercan airport to Kyrenia 43.4 km and 45 minutes. Between the towns the roads are mostly two lanes each way, but beyond Bafra towards the Karpaz it narrows to a single lane and there is nowhere to overtake.
Fuel and parking
Fuel prices in the TRNC are set by the state and identical at every station: as of March 2026, 95 petrol was 61.12 TL a litre and diesel 60 TL. Fill up in Iskele or Bafra before the Karpaz; stations are few further on, and the round trip to Golden Beach and back works out at roughly 795 TL in fuel. In Kyrenia the harbour parking is on paid municipal lots; in season, get there before noon. Famagusta's old town has plenty of parking, by the Land Gate and along the walls.
Beyond Bafra it is a single lane: allow two hours to the Karpaz, not an hour and a half.
What to bear in mind in August
Leave early: at seven in the morning the Famagusta–Kyrenia road is empty, by ten there are queues on the approaches to the beaches. Hire cars are not allowed through the crossing points to the south; at Deryneia you leave the car and walk across (the crossing is open 07:00–23:00). Keep a supply of water in the car and never leave children or animals inside: the sun heats it in minutes.
- Fill the tank in Iskele or Bafra before heading to the Karpaz.
- Allow an hour and a half with margin for Kyrenia–Famagusta, not an hour.
- In Kyrenia, park at the municipal lot by the harbour before noon.
- Take water for everyone and sunshades for the windows.
- Head back from the Karpaz before sunset: it is a single unlit lane.
