Park Rest Journal — August 2026 · Practical
Coming to Northern Cyprus for a month or longer in August means arranging daily life so the heat does not get in the way: shopping in the morning, cooking at home, keeping the air conditioning on and not overpaying for data. Below: what to buy where, which chains stay open late, what internet costs and what to budget for, on fresh figures.
Groceries and supermarkets
The biggest chain is Lemar: large stores with a bakery and a butcher's counter, and the Kyrenia (Girne) branch is open daily 7:30–23:00. Starling is open 7:30–22:30 and delivers orders of 200 TL and up. There are also Tempo, Şokmar and Supreme, which stocks imported goods. Local produce (dairy, chicken, vegetables) is cheap; imports come via Turkey and cost noticeably more. On a July 2026 estimate, groceries run to £150–250 a month for one person and £250–400 for a couple. For vegetables and hellim (the local halloumi) go to the market: Thursdays in Famagusta (Gazimağusa), Wednesdays in Kyrenia, Saturdays in Güzelyurt; Iskele opened a covered market in February 2026, and the day is best checked with the municipality. Markets take cash in lira.
Mobile data
There are two operators, Turkcell and Telsim. Turkcell's Turist Plus package is 30 GB for 15 days at 699 TL, and its Turist Mini eSIM 40 GB for 4 days at 429 TL; Telsim's Turist eSIM is 55 GB for 14 days at 699 TL (as of July 2026). A passport is all you need to buy one; there are outlets at Ercan airport and in the town centres. A phone brought in from abroad must be registered in the BTHK system, or the network will cut it off after a while.
Shop in the morning, market once a week, eSIM before you fly.
Sport, laundry, utilities
A gym membership is £20–40 a month, electricity in summer with the air conditioning on is £40–80, and delivery of bottled drinking water £15–25 (as of July 2026). Running and cycling are pleasant on the Long Beach promenade in Iskele early in the morning or after 18:00. We could not find laundrettes with fixed prices in the towns; ask the club concierge or at the place where you are staying.
- Set up a Turkcell or Telsim eSIM before you fly and register your phone with BTHK.
- Go to Lemar before 9am: cool, fresh bread, no queues.
- Take cash in lira to the market and a cool bag for the hellim.
- Order bottled water delivery on your first day: in summer you drink it by the litre.
- Train on the promenade before 8am, and choose a gym with air conditioning.
