Packing for Northern Cyprus in July is simpler than it looks: half of the standard list will never leave the case, and a handful of small things make all the difference. Here is what earns its place at 35°C and a UV index of 11, how pharmacies, money and mobile data work, and what to leave at home.
Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen, a brimmed hat, UV-filter sunglasses, a light long-sleeved shirt for midday and shoes with a proper sole for castle steps. You will want a sun parasol for beaches with no shade and a refillable bottle. A raincoat and umbrella will sit idle, since it rains about once a month in July; the one warm layer you need is a jumper for the night hatchling release at Alagadi.
Pharmacies and sun
In summer, from 15 May to 17 September, pharmacies open on weekdays 08:30–13:30 and 16:00–19:30, and on Wednesdays and Saturdays only until 13:00; on Sundays and public holidays a duty pharmacy (nöbetçi eczane) is open, its address posted in the window of any pharmacy, and there is an app from the Kıbrıs Türk Eczacılar Birliği. Bring prescription medicines with you, along with the prescription. The July sun is extreme: in late July 2026 the weather service issued a separate warning about very high UV, so keep the beach to before 10 and after 16:00.
Money
The currency is the Turkish lira, but accommodation and excursions are often priced in euros and pounds. In the towns cards and contactless are the norm; you need cash for the dolmuş (shared minibus), markets and village tavernas. Cash machines charge around 60–120 TL per withdrawal (as of March 2026), so withdraw less often and more at a time, and choose to pay in TRY rather than your own currency at the terminal. The exchange offices in central Kyrenia (Girne) give a better rate than the airport.
Staying connected
The Kuzey Kıbrıs Turkcell tourist eSIM is sold at Ercan among other places: 40 GB for 7 days at 449 TL, 60 GB for 15 days at 599 TL (as of September 2026); you need your passport to register. The networks on the two parts of the island are separate, so check whether Northern Cyprus is included in your roaming package.

- Withdraw lira for two or three days at a time and decline the ATM's offer to convert into your own currency.
- Keep 5–10% in cash for tips: taverna card terminals do not offer them.
- Go to the pharmacy on a weekday morning: on Wednesdays and Saturdays they close at 13:00.
- Pack one warm jumper for the night at Alagadi and leave every other warm thing at home.
