July is the hottest and driest month in Northern Cyprus, and whether to come is settled less by the weather than by how you plan your day. Here is what temperatures to expect in Kyrenia (Girne) and Famagusta (Gazimağusa), how warm the sea is, what runs on a summer timetable and how to shape the day so the heat does not spoil the holiday.
The weather
Climate records put Kyrenia's average July daytime high at around 34–36°C, with nights cooling only to 21°C. Rain falls on roughly one day a month, the sun is out for 12 hours a day and the UV index sits at 11, the 'extreme' level. In late July 2026 the TRNC weather service warned of 36°C in Girne and 40°C in Nicosia (Lefkoşa) and Ercan, 2–3 degrees above the norm.
The sea is July's strongest argument: off Kyrenia the water averages 27°C, nearer 28°C by the end of the month. Swimming is more comfortable before ten in the morning and after five in the afternoon; at midday the sand is scorching, and shade and the coastal breeze are what save you.
What's open
The season is in full swing and everything keeps summer hours. St Hilarion Castle is open daily 09:00–18:30, last entry 16:30; Bellapais Abbey 08:00–19:00, last entry 18:00; an adult ticket to either is 150 TL under the Department of Antiquities' 2026 summer tariff. Small village shops often close for an afternoon break from about 14:00 to 17:00 in summer; supermarkets stay open through the day.
Alagadi beach, east of Kyrenia, is July's special case. From late May to the end of September it is closed to the public at night, torches and fires are banned on the sand, and from 20 July the SPOT society releases the hatchlings: on weekdays by prior booking, at weekends in open sessions with no booking needed.
July in Northern Cyprus works if you live by a morning-and-evening timetable.
- Plan the sea and any driving before 11am, castles and museums after 16:00, and lunch in the shade.
- Check last entry times: St Hilarion admits until 16:30, Bellapais Abbey until 18:00.
- To join a weekday hatchling release at Alagadi, phone SPOT at noon sharp on the day.
- Book a car with air conditioning well ahead: July is peak demand for hire cars.
