Golden Beach (Altınkum, also known as Turtle Beach) is around four kilometres of sand at the very tip of the Karpaz peninsula in Northern Cyprus, 15 km beyond the village of Dipkarpaz. From Kyrenia (Girne) it is a full day on the road, two and a half to three hours each way, so the question is not whether to go but how to prepare so the day is not wasted.
Getting there
From Kyrenia you head east along the coast road through Esentepe and Tatlısu to Kaplıca, where a new wide road climbs in a few minutes to the Karpaz junction; the alternative is via Iskele and Bafra. Beyond Bafra the road narrows to one lane each way, and the last kilometres past Dipkarpaz are the slowest. Dipkarpaz has the last petrol station on the peninsula; you do not need four-wheel drive, but the approach to the beach is noticeably rougher than town roads.
The water
The water is usually clear and the entry gentle; in calm weather you can swim with children. There is almost no shade on the sand and by midday it is scorching, so in July arrive by nine and leave after lunch. In late July 2026 the weather service warned of 1–2 m waves with a south-westerly wind: on an open beach like this, check the forecast the day before.
Facilities
On the beach itself there are no lifeguards, no sunbeds for hire and no café; entry is free. What there is amounts to a few seasonal places on the approach roads: Big Sand Beach Restaurant & Bungalows with six bungalows and a grill above the beach, Burhan's Place and Hasan's Turtle Beach. Green and loggerhead turtles nest here from May to October: the beach is closed at night, fenced-off nests are to be given a wide berth, and torches and fires are banned.
Along the way you pass the wild donkeys of the Karpaz reserve, and the Apostolos Andreas monastery at the tip of the peninsula is usually combined with the beach in a single outing. Leave yourself a margin for the return: the narrow road after sunset is slower and more tiring.
A full tank at Dipkarpaz, water and a parasol: without them, do not set off for Golden Beach.
- Leave Kyrenia by eight in the morning to be on the sand before the heat.
- Take two litres of water per person, a parasol and cash in lira: cards are not accepted everywhere.
- Download an offline map: the signal drops out on the peninsula and signposts are few.
- Keep clear of the fenced turtle nests and leave the beach before sunset.
